Making Biodiesel at Home - 3 Things to Ask Yourself Before Starting

Do Your Research Before Investing in Biodiesel Production Equipment

There is a lot of interest in alternative fuel sources. This is due to a number of factors, the high price of fuel and environmental concerns a major reasons why people what to know what other fuel sources are available to them.

Biodiesel fuel is appealing because it is often seen as a source of fuel that you can make yourself, in your own home. But before jumping into this you need to make sure you are prepared. I'm not talking about being prepared with the proper equipment, what I mean  is do you understand all the safety precautions, the time involved, etc.

The 3 things to ask yourself before making biodiesel at home are:

1. Am I fully aware of the safe issues and can I take the necessary precautions to ensure the safety of myself and my family?
2. Do I understand the time involved in the process?
3. How will using biodiesel affect my vehicle's warranty?

When making biodiesel at home, you need to make sure you have a well ventilated area. On the Internet you will often read articles that make it seem so easy to make biodiesel right in your own basement. But ask yourself, do you really want to be making highly combustible fuel in your own home? Do you have a barn or shed separate from the house where you could set up this project? That would be my preference, especially with kids around the house. Remember that there are toxic ingredients that are used in the biodiesel production process so that is another thing you want to keep careful track of so no one gets into this stuff and gets hurt.

Are you fully prepared to take the time to learn the process of making biodiesel at home? Remember there is not only the time needed to set up the equipment, but you will need to practice making small test batches of biodiesel until you get a batch that works. Your test batches need to be tested to ensure that they are a fuel grade product. When doing this you need to keep notes on how you make each batch so that when you get a batch you are happy with, you will have the notes that tell you how you made it.

There are two things you need to understand about biodiesel and a vehicle warranty. The first is that if you use biodiesel in your vehicle and it damages the engine, your warranty may not cover the damage. Read your warranty carefully before putting biodiesel fuel in your tank. The second thing you need to understand is that if someone else uses the biodiesel you made and it damages their vehicle's engine, you can be help liable for the damage. So, I guess the lesson here is that you should know you warranty thoroughly before using biodiesel in your engine AND do not give your biodiesel to anyone or sell it to anyone. That way you cannot be help responsible for damage to anyone else's vehicle.

Well if you've read this and still feel comfortable moving on with the process of learning how to make biodiesel then my last bit of advice to you is to learn everything you can about making biodiesel at home before you invest in any equipment. Any decent biodiesel equipment manufacturer worth their weight will be able to help you with any question you may have about the process. Feel free to pick their brains to learn as much as you can.
